Crafts - Woodcarving

Woodcarving is an important art in South Asia, particularly in states such as Assam that are rich in forests. Some carving is for practical purposes, particularly house construction. Other carving is for decorative objects, such as those made out of sandalwood, and religious figures.

As large trees become scarce, due to clearing or over-use of forests, woodcarvers are turning to more widely available woods. Conservation organisations are working with woodcarvers to encourage use of sustainably harvested trees.
