Many of the ancient gardens of South Asia don’t exist anymore because they have been destroyed over time. We have to learn all about them from old descriptions and paintings instead.

Old paintings and manuscripts tell us that the ancient South Asian gardens were built to provide havens for people. They were symbols of paradise and in them grew trees and sacred plants which provide shade, fruit and fragrance. Water ponds were often built, which cooled the air, and seats, swings and hammocks were provided for rest.

Gardens can be used as a place of worship, for meditation and relaxation or as a resting place for the dead. Look at the four pictures below. What do you think makes them sacred?
