Keystage 2 - Art - Indian market stall

Make a model of a colourful Indian market stall with boxes and baskets of vegetables! It can either be a stall in India or in Britain, but it should be selling some of the vegetables from the Plant Cultures website.

Indian market stall You will need:

Making the stall
1. Cut the top and bottom from a shallow cardboard box and open out the walls into a long cardboard strip.

Ask an adult to help if you are using a craft knife.
2. Fold the walls as shown in the image on the left to make the stall with an awning and a table at the front.

Use straws or pencils to prop up the awning at each side.

Paste paper onto the box to make a colourful awning.
3. Use thin card or strong paper to make cut-outs of the traders and some shoppers like these on the left if you wish.

Look through the website for pictures of some of the clothes they might be wearing.

Have a look here for an example of older Indian costumes,
or here for modern clothes.

4. Now make boxes, baskets and sacks for the stall. It’s easier to colour them before you glue them together.

5. Make fruit and vegetables. You can make them from modelling clay, paper or card. Have a look at these picture.
Try to make the vegetables look like the Indian ones.
Add price labels – ‘Mangoes – 3 for only £1’ or ‘Mangoes – 5 Rupees each’.

6. Several market stalls in a line make a whole market!
