Schools - KS 3 & 4 - Citizenship

The ideas below are designed to allow students to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in a number of areas, such as our rights and responsibilities as global citizens. They also encourage them to become active citizens, through participation in a number of community activities, including enhancement projects with voluntary groups and running Fairtrade stalls, and cultural diversity days at school.

Europe’s past

Reflect on Europe’s colonial past and how economic structures were set up to exploit the resources of the colonies to benefit the colonial powers. Do you think these continue today?

The Environment

Look at the impact of cash crops and think of solutions to these problems:
  • Fertile land is planted to the expense of local people who may struggle to grow food for themselves.
  • World commodity prices vary, and are fixed by multi-national corporations. Profit versus welfare.
  • Environmental degradation; pollution, erosion, loss of biodiversity and genetic material.
  • Think about equality, justice, gender issues and welfare of the people and the planet.
