Story details
Henna used for traditional Muslim weddings
Mrs Jubadu Akthar
Henna we use for traditional Muslims wedding and Eid to decorate our hands and use the colour for our hair. We pick the leaves in the daytime then at night, when all the work has finish, grandmother and mum sit down to make the paste and design the different pattern on our hands, sometime, stars, banana trees or sunflowers. This is special for our childhood and we would look at each other hand to see whose Mehndi /Henna designs are better. When you have cracks on your foot or burning you can use henna and this will close the cracks and cool down the burning on the foot. You can use henna to make an oil. You use this on your hair to cool it down when you have a headache or high blood pressure.
This story was collected by the Museum of London at workshops with the Coriander Club at Spitalfields Farm, East London.
