This Hindu wedding ceremony is taking place in an ashram, a spiritual venue. Turmeric powder, made from the roots of the plant, is being placed into the bride's hands. Turmeric is associated with fertility and prosperity and often applied to a bride's face and body as part of the ritual purification during the wedding ceremony. The bride's hands in this photograph have also been decorated with henna, a red-brown dye made from the leaves of the henna plant.
