Click here for more detailsThis illustration has been executed in watercolour on Whatman paper. The artist is unknown, although the style strongly resembles another illustration of Tagetes patula, which is signed 'Samlall', and dated 1809. The inscription 'Genda Inector' refers to the common name published in Indian floras, the additional inscription 'Lin:Sp.Pl.' after the scientific name informs us that this plant was first described by Linneaus in his publication Species Plantarum, of 1753. Artists employed by the East India Company would earn around 50 rupees a month in 1807, half the salary of a native officer, but a little more than staff employed in collecting 'natural curiosities', who collected around 40 rupees.
