Click here for more detailsThis painting is just one of over a hundred sketches, diagrams and illustrations made by Charles Maries in preparation for his unpublished work 'Cultivated Mangoes of India'. This particular painting was made in Darbhanga, at a time when Maries was working on the gardens of the Rajah of Darbhanga in northern India. Inscribed in the lower right corner is the name of the variety of the fruit, firstly in Urdu, followed by its English translation with an explanation, "Tamancha (Literally - Pistol. indicative of a fancied resemblance of the fruit to a pistol)." Maries would often note the quality or taste of the mango, where it was found growing, and also the month in which it would fruit.
