Mary was the wife of George Govan, Superintendent of the Botanic Garden at Saharanpur, who published 'The Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains' in 1824. George was also the first botanist to penetrate the Sabathu Hills near Simla, in 1817. The paintings were presented by the Govans' sons, Douglas M. Govan and Major General C.M. Govan in 1904.
