Blue indigo dye is yielded from the green leaves of the plant through a process of fermentation and oxidation. This photograph shows an indigo factory where this would have been carried out. It was important to be near a source of water as it was needed for the process. You might also be able to make out the workers standing on the edges of the tank walls.
