The banyan tree is sacred to the Hindus and is used for shelter. The palmyra palm is grown for its timber, fibre, leaves, sap (toddy) and edible fruit. The lettering reads; the wedded banian tree, or the palmyra and burr tree united, drawn on salsette. Taken from Oriental Memoirs, Forbes, James (1813). London. Vol. 1.
