Click here for more detailsPhotograph taken in 1900-01 by the Wesleyan missionary in south India, Robert Arthur Ellis, shows tea being packed into small cubicle parcels in Coonoor, Nilgiris. Nilgiris teas are grown throughout the year, unlike teas from Darjeeling or Assam and are often referred to as "The Fragrant One." The flavour and fragrance of a superior Nilgiris tea is the result of the high elevation and the fact that it is grown among eucalyptus, blue gum and cypress plants. Coonoor is the tea centre of the Nilgiris auction centres where over one million pounds are sold each and every week. A European supervisor, or probably the owner of the tea estate, is seen here carrying a dog while supervising the packing activity of his workers. A boy, probably his son, looks on.
