Click here for more detailsThe 1883 exhibition held in Amsterdam was the International Colonial Exhibition, Internationale Koloniale en Untvoerhandel Tentoonsellung. International and Colonial exhibitions such as this were conceived as international trade showcases and were held frequently at different countries in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This fibre and rope was displayed by the Conservator of Forests in Madras and was donated to Kew by the India Office after the exhibition. At this time Madras was the name of a state in southern India, the state is now called Tamil Nadu and Madras is the name used for the state's capital.
