Click here for more detailsThis sample of cotton seed was donated to Kew by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. The Society themselves had acquired it from Messrs. Barker & Co, a company in Hull, along with several other cotton samples from India and Egypt. It looks as though the long seed hairs (lint fibres) have already been removed from these seeds, leaving just the fuzz fibres (short linters) covering the seed coat. This seed was collected from Bombay when it was a state in west central India, now divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra. Bombay (Mumbai) is the name now given to the capital of Maharashtra.
