Story details
Coconuts at funerals
Massendra Patel
The coconut is always there in the Hindu religion, it's a holy fruit. For every Holi celebration, for puja, for everything, coconut's always used. When someone dies, we put four coconuts at each corner of the body. Sometimes the widow will ask the priest, 'He was a very important, very rich man, why can't I put five coconuts to show my respect and his status?' - but the answer is always the same, even if the dead man is a millionaire he can only have four, just as if he was the poorest beggar. The coconuts are burnt all together with the body. God designed the coconut so that humans would never go hungry, because the first men were worried that the animals would eat all their food. God made the coconut so hard that only humans have the brains to open it! A monkey can't open one, nor can an elephant.
